What should I know about my first physical therapy appointment?

Please, if possible, wear or bring clothes that you feel comfortable moving around in – no one has to get dressed up to see us ;).

Upon your arrival at our office, you will register at our front desk. Laura, our Office Manager, or her assistant, will help you with the insurance and intake process so that you can focus on having the best recovery possible.

Next, your physical therapist will come out and greet you before bringing you back to your private treatment room for your initial assessment. During your assessment they will ask questions about your current pain or injury, as well as your medical history and any goals you have for coming to see us. Try to be as honest as you can; open communication helps us to understand your problem better!

Your movement, strength, coordination, and much more will be assessed during your appointment. Our goal is to help you, so please make sure that you communicate with your therapist if anything hurts or bothers you during the examination! People often come to us because they are in pain. While we understand that sometimes we have to do things to determine where that pain is coming from, for the most part, we do not believe in the “no pain, no gain” philosophy; rather, you have already been in pain, so tell us if something hurts because we do not want to cause more.

Your physical therapist will let you know, with as much certainty as possible, not only what is going on, but why and what is needed to fully address the issue. From there, the two of you will come up with a customized course of treatment to ensure the quickest recovery and the best results. If possible, some treatment will be performed on the first day to get you started on the road to recovery. However, you will get into the full swing of your treatment plan during the next visit.

After your therapist has finished, you will schedule a series of visits at the front desk. The amount of therapy needed will depend upon the advice of your therapist, and will also be discussed with you at your first visit.

Your therapist will write their findings and plan for treatment to be submitted to your referring physician or any other medical professional you choose. We believe in a team approach. All of your medical team works for you, and it only works the best if we are all on the same page.

We offer a lot of convenient appointment times, but prime times can be busy, so it’s best to book ahead as much as possible.

If you have any questions at any time, please do not hesitate to call the office or email your therapist directly. We want to ensure you are satisfied and have a complete recovery.
